Twelve

When I arrived home, the scent of something delicious greeted me, and my stomach cried out with happy rumbles. Unfortunately, Gideon had left the pot simmering on the stove and a note on the table that said he’d been called away unexpectedly. After what Vivian had said to me, I really wanted to fold myself into his embrace, but I supposed I would have to wait.

I’d just finished a long shower, donned comfy jammies, and settled onto the couch with a murder mystery and a glass of wine, when my phone rang. I frowned when I saw my mother’s name on the screen. I tried to ward off a sense of doom as I tapped the screen to answer. “Mum? Are you okay?”

“I am fine,” she said in a stilted voice. “I... Could you come over for a minute. I need to talk to you.”

I sucked in a tense breath, wondering what might be up. “You okay?”

“Yes. I’ve spoken with Jocelyn, and I need to see you.”

My sense of doom immediately shifted to excitement. If she’d spoken to Jocelyn, perhaps the leader of our coven had agreed that it was time for me to receive something else from my mother’s chest of secrets. Maybe after my recent success with Herman Huber’s ghost, my time had come. “Sure, Mum. I’ll be right over.”

Freya met me at my front door and glanced up at me expectantly. “Do you want to come with me?”

She meowed in the affirmative, so I picked her up and headed out. I didn’t bother to take the time to change since I was only going to my mom’s. I also might have exceeded the speed limit a few times as I hurried down the mountain to her house.

I parked, lifted Freya, and held her against my chest. As I exited, I spied Jocelyn’s car parked along the street, and my anticipation increased. The high priestess was at my mom’s house. That had to mean this was something important.

I tested my mom’s doorknob, found it unlocked, and stepped inside.

The scent of magic was heavy in the air, and I breathed deeply. Whatever the two had been doing required powerful energy and intrigued me to the tips of my toes.

I found them in my mother’s sitting room, my mom in her chair, and Jocelyn on the nearby couch where I usually sat. I dropped Freya to the floor as I glanced between both of their faces and found solemn expressions. My mind tried to justify the reasons why they’d look that way in relation to me receiving more gifts, but I couldn’t make the connection. “Hey, Mum. Hi, Jocelyn.”

The high priestess stood, sending the hem of her bright purple skirt rushing to the floor. Her long gray braid hung over one shoulder, and though I searched her expression, I couldn’t read any emotion in her dark blue eyes.

She held out a hand toward me, and light from a nearby table lamp glinted off the many silver bangles encircling her wrist. “Come, Daisy.
